After an absolutely hideous journey home which involved changing tube lines 3 times due to delays (with a very heavy suitcase up and down station steps), I’m finally back at university!
Unfortunately I sold myself out and got some shop-made cupcakes. Being an avid baker, cakes and cupcakes especially, I know that one of these little minis is the same price as making a batch of 12 regular sized ones from scratch, but I couldn’t help myself as they’re all so adorable!
Living in London I’m surrounded by loads of cute little bakeries, but Lola’s cupcakes have recently seemed to appear everywhere, especially in train stations on my tube line- the temptation is craaazy! I was heaving my ridiculously heavy suitcase through the packed train station and there stood the pastel blue cart like a beacon of hope… of course I stopped!
The regular sized cupcakes retail at £2.75 but I always opt for the minis (£1.40 each) as they’re much better for a snack size, the big ones just look too much. My favourite thing is that they put them in these cute little cupcake holders then box them up all pretty and photogenic. The flavours I got are (clockwise);
-Vanilla with two different coloured icings
-Cookies and Cream
The vanilla sponge ones are really sweet: literally. The sponge is very delicate and crumbly, and then they’re capped with a mountain of buttercream icing. I couldn’t imagine eating the large versions of these as they’re so sweet, but as a mini they’re lovely. The purple one came with a beautiful lavender coloured frosting with little pale violet stars which was very pretty. Unfortunately this one fell out of the holder on the train and got a bit squashed in the corner which ruined the photo, but definitely not the taste!
My other vanilla cupcake has a lovely bright fuchsia frosting and little iridescent purple edible balls on top which makes a really nice contrast. This one caught my eye because I love pink, seriously anything pink I will more than likely buy just because it’s pink. I’m definitely going to save this one for Monday as I have 9-6 lectures so it’ll cheer me up to eat this in bed after a long day with a rubbish chick flick.
The third cupcake I got was a lovely little lemon. I’ve never been a huge lemon lover,but my best friend is absolutely obsessed with anything lemon flavoured so I’ve become more and more into it. This sponge is lemon flavoured, and I’m very interested in how they got such a zesty flavour because I’ll admit, I can’t work with lemon when baking apart from lemon drizzle cake. The frosting is also lemon flavoured and it’s decorated with little yellow iridescent balls as well. It’s a very light cupcake compared to the vanilla ones which is really nice, I look forward to eating this one tomorrow after tea!
The last one I picked is my favourite cupcake from Lola’s; the cookies and cream. I am a HUGE Oreo fan, I absolutely love them in all flavours and shapes and sizes. Maybe this is the reason why my diets never seem 100% effective! I’ve had a few of these before from this stand, and they’re just the right size as a mini; not too sickly and not too rich, just right! The sponge has cookies in and so does the frosting which is very creamy; then to top it all off there’s a mini Oreo too! I absolutely adore this cupcake, I definitely have to find a good recipe for them to make at home.
After that trek home with all my bags/luggage, I’m ready for a sit down, a cup of tea and one of these beauties… or three! I’ll leave the link to Lola’s cupcakes website- they deliver which I just found out from the site, that will definitely be my salvation/downfall during exam season! They do brownies and whole cakes too, with a range of wheat free/gluten free products and all suitable for vegetarians so it’s definitely worth giving them a look!
