When I’m travelling, or simply don’t have a lot of time in the morning, the temptation to just forgo makeup is crazy. I don’t wear makeup very often, not a full face anyway, so my essentials are already very minimal; mascara, cocoa butter vaseline, eyebrow pencil, done. Makeup does make me feel more human, even if I’m just putting on some winged eyeliner at 2pm because I’m not even dressed yet. As I’m away quite a lot, I always have a mini travel makeup bag that I put my absolute essential products into rather than haul around my admittedly large vanity case, so I thought I’d put together a post on this as I’m currently in Wales again so have only brought these items with me!
After my shower and washing my face, I start with concealer for any blemishes or discolouration. My go-to concealer is Fake Up by Benefit although this morning I scraped the last use out of it so I’ll have to go and try some others next. I bought this mini as part of a set in duty free, but the normal size is a little bigger and retails at around £15.00 from most drugstores. I love this concealer as it gives a very even coverage and can be worn on its own or under foundation without blurring or fading. I apply this with my fingers as I’m really rubbish with all the different makeup brushes and feel like I can be more accurate when applying this myself.
Next is foundation. I don’t wear foundation on a daily basis unless I wake up feeling a little paler than usual or want my complexion to have a pick-me-up. I currently use the Rimmel London Match Perfection Foundation in the tone Classic Beige which is £6.99. I’ve had this bottle since last year, it really is such good value for money as it lasts for absolutely ages! Although it looks quite dark upon application, you’ll find that it does tone down a bit once it settles onto the skin. I apply a thin layer over my t-zone first then blend over my face and on my jaw/neckline so I don’t end up with a big obvious contrast. This colour does match my natural skintone which is a bit olive-yellow coloured which I find difficult to pair with a foundation so I would always recommend this. When I go on holiday I do go for the darker shade as it just blends that bit better with my tan, but I can’t fault this product at all.
Next I do my eyebrows with my Bobbi Brown Brow Pencil in Ash which is a medium brown and retails at £16.00 from the Bobbi Brown website. These pencils are really creamy and easy to apply/blend which is really helpful for me as I often go completely wrong with my eyebrows and end up with weird brown slugs on my forehead by accident! I love that each pencil comes with a sweet little sharpener, as I’ve found that mine runs out quite quickly because this is a product that I use every day even without any other makeup, it can really alter the look of your face to have defined brows even if you haven’t really applied anything else.
As I’ve already mentioned, I’m obsessed with the Scandaleyes Jumbo Liquid Eye Liner by Rimmel London in 001 Black. I bought this a few weeks ago for £5.49 from Superdrug and have used it pretty much every day since. I can’t apply gel or kohl because my hand doesn’t feel steady enough, but with this product everything is different. It’s pretty much a big marker pen for your eyes. I feel like I’m very precise and each stroke just does exactly what I want it to do. It’s very easy to build up if you’re not very confident with liquid eyeliner, so doing a light base then building with stronger strokes would be perfect. I prefer a winged eyeliner as it makes my eyes look bigger and more awake, but it’s really just a personal preference and I think any style would be easy with this product. I also love that it’s quite waterproof, one less thing to worry about if experiencing some stress-induced crying- as I know all too well!
Lastly for my eyes in an everyday look I apply my mascara. If I have more time I’d go for an eyeshadow under the eyeliner but I can do this look in under 10 minutes so it’s my usual default face. I adore Benefit’s They’re Real mascara of which I must have about 5 little minis. The regular sized product can be priced between £15.00-£17.00 depending on the retailer and although this may seem a little pricey, I really do recommend this mascara as it works miracles on eyelashes, extending them like the eyelashes of camels while never seeming to make them clump which I find with a lot of mascaras. I apply a few coats to my top lashes, concentrating on getting the outer corner as this really lifts the eyes, and then softly brush over my lower lashes to bring them out too. This has been a staple in my makeup bag for years, I can’t praise it enough!
Lastly I’ll either apply Vaseline/clear lip balm which I’ll have in my bag for reapplication during the day, or lately I’ve been using my Clinique Chubby Stick in No7 Super Strawberry. This is a very light, moisturising, colour lip balm which also has the most amazing taste to it. Even though I’m allergic to strawberries I could just go for a bowl of them covered in sugar and cream every time I wear this, so so tempting! The silver end of the stick twists so that you can roll the lip balm end up and down to protect it for longer, and I really like the packaging too. I think these lip balms are perfect for an everyday look as they add a subtle sprinkle of colour to your face without it looking too bold. It currently comes in 18 beautiful shades and retails at £17.00. This will definitely continue to be a staple in my everyday makeup bag, especially when summer comes as it will keep my lips nice and moisturised!
Lastly I’ll spritz myself up with any body spray that I’m loving at that moment. Right now I’ve been using the Ted Baker Regency Houses Body Spray which was £12.00 in a Boots sale. The scent isn’t that overpoweringly fruity, and contains raspberry, rose and also sandalwood which makes it quite musky which is a scent I haven’t gone for before but really like.
So that’s my everyday look/makeup essentials that I’ll always make sure to take with my when I’m travelling or going somewhere for the weekend! I’ve shown a before and after of the makeup; my hair is quite long but when up in a ponytail it looks quite short so I use the double pony-tail cheat which is to put around just over a third into a low pony and the rest into one just higher so it gives the illusion of sustaining length while getting your hair off of your face!
