For me this year isn’t just about achieving goals, but pushing myself out of my comfort zone and getting more out of life. One of my biggest ‘fears’ is eating on my own in a proper restaurant. I’m fine with grabbing a sandwich in a coffee shop or something but the idea of sitting down in a big restaurant on my own and eating a proper meal is something that’s always felt terrifying to me.
While I was in London for a doctor’s appointment the other day I decided to combat this fear head on by going to a restaurant I’d never even heard of before and eating there on my own!
What grabbed me was the blackboard advertising their £10 lunch deal- a burger and side for a tenner. This might seem quite expensive still but come on, it’s London. Fitzrovia is notoriously expensive as well so I felt like I could justify this splurging! There weren’t many options on the lunch deal menu- 4 burgers, 3 of them coming with supplements which I thought was pretty cheeky as this would be outside of the deal. I opted for the regular burger, and I have to admit it was pretty amazing. The meat was so juicy and came in a buttermilk bun which didn’t disintegrate like in most burger restaurants. Plus there was some kind of mustard involved in the sauce which gave the whole thing a great kick. I loved how it came on a cute vintage plate; the sweet potato fries with truffle salt even came in a china teacup!
As it says on the Google page, BOBO Social is a bi-level restaurant with really quaint and kitsch decor- the bathroom had my old floral bedroom wallpaper plus a white fluffy chair in one corner which made my Kate Spade bag look so gorgeous! I think you’re definitely paying for the atmosphere mostly; it’s honestly hard to believe this place is just off of bustling Oxford Street!
The staff weren’t the most attentive although that might be because there was a large table on the floor below me, but I did feel quite ignored and rushed out of the place. However I really love the little guest comment book that the bill comes in- a really sweet idea and a chance to see other peoples’ opinions of the place.
I would love to go back and try out the unique burger making masterclass that BOBO Social offer as I’ve never seen this in a restaurant before and would be really interested in learning how to recreate these kinds of recipes at home. That’s certainly something very unique to this restaurant and a way of attracting bigger crowds to the place.
Overall, I’d give the food an 8/10 as I really couldn’t fault it despite the price, and the general atmosphere and experience of the place gets a 7/10 as I did feel like the staff could have made a little more of an effort with not just me but the other 2 customers sitting around me and not just focused on the bigger table downstairs.
